Artist's Statement:
Stone: The process of using a hammer and chisel
and chipping away at a seemingly indestructable
material satisifies my need for a new challenge
every day.
Many boulders or stone formations seem to have
strong personalities and I receive a kind of energy
from them. When I choose to use a boulder for a
sculpture, I like to leave as much as possible of
its original presence alone.
My belief is that we are simply another form of
nature and not superior to it, along with my
facination for the human face, inspires me to
combine the two. I am attracted to shapes, and a
face not only expresses humanity, but has many
different contours concentrated in one small
area.
Bronze: In recent years I have been working
with the sensual female nude. I have incorporated a
stronger and simpler element of design, and
celebrate the positive and negative shapes the
figures make in space.
In my school years, I competed in gymnastics. I
have started an acrobatic series that relates to my
love of this sport. I plan to keep this group in
the sketch format, much like the small bronze
ballerinas of Degas.
Another theme you will see in my work, whether it
be in bronze or stone, is that of idealized female
beauty. I have expressed both the postive and
negative aspects of it, and sometimes use the image
of a mask to do so.
